2010 Sony Ericsson Open – Nick’s Picks – Men’s Singles Round 3

Andy Roddick (USA) vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR)

Roddick moved past Igor Andreev 6-4, 6-4 in the second round and looked good throughout the match. The top-ranked American comes into the tournament having lost in the finals of Indian Wells to Ivan Ljubicic, but playing well nonetheless. Roddick won this tournament back in 2004 and reached the semis in 2008. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Roddick playing on the final weekend.

Stakhovsky upset Julien Benneteau in the second round 6-3, 7-6(5) to reach the third round of Miami for the first time in his career. The 24-year old Ukrainian comes into the tournament ranked #72 in the world and he is a dangerous player.

Match-up:

This is the first career match between Stakhovsky and Roddick and it should be an interesting one. Stakhovsky plays big from both sides and has a booming serve. Unfortunately, Roddick has a bigger serve and he has the ability to vary his groundstrokes which will keep Stakhovsky off-balance. Roddick is moving well, playing will plenty of confidence and has always had great success in Miami. With the American fans behind him, I look for Roddick to advance in straight sets.

Nick’s Pick – Roddick in 2 sets

Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) vs. Marin Cilic (CRO)

Cilic comes into the tournament ranked #9 in the world and he is looking to rebound from a disappointing performance at Indian Wells where he lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round. He easily handled Stephane Robert 6-3, 6-1 in the second round and he is looking to reach the fourth round of Miami for the first time in his young career.

A year ago at this time, Baghdatis was ranked #105 in the world and he has worked his way all the way back up to #30. He advanced to the fourth round at Indian Wells last week where he beat Roger Federer in the third round before losing to Tommy Robredo. That just goes to show that you never know what you are going to get from Baghdatis!

Match-up:

This is the first career meeting between the 24-year old Baghdatis and the 21-year old Cilic. Both players have already won titles this year and both have played well thus far in 2010. Baghdatis is a showman, and the crowd loves him. He has a great two-handed backhand, moves well, and has the ability to beat anyone when he is on. Baghdatis can hit every shot in the book and understands what it takes to beat the top guys in the world. Cilic is a big boy with a huge forehand and sonic serve. He can come to the net and for his size he moves extremely well. I feel that Cilic has a little more firepower than Baghdatis, and he can also mix it up. This is going to be a tight match, but I have to give a slight edge to Cilic.
