2010 Sony Ericsson Open – Nick’s Picks – Men’s Singles Semifinals

Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Andy Roddick (USA)

Nadal beat Jo-Willy Tsonga 6-3, 6-2 in the quarters and is in the semis of Miami for the third time in his career. He reached the finals in 2005 and lost to Federer in five sets and he was a finalist back in 2008 where he lost to Davydenko in straight sets. Last year he reached the quarters before Del Potro took him down. Right now, I would say that Nadal is playing some of the best tennis I have seen from him in a long time.

Roddick advanced easily past Nicolas Almagro, taking down the Spaniard 6-3, 6-3. It seems as Roddick has been getting older he has been getting better with his strokes and his mental preparation. He was a finalist last week at Indian Wells and was also a finalist at San Jose back in February. Like Nadal, he is playing superb tennis.

Match-up:

Nadal is 5-2 against Roddick and beat him last year at Indian Wells in straight sets. So far, this is the match of the tournament and with Federer out I feel the winner of this match is the favorite to take home the title. Against Tsonga, Nadal was playing closer to the baseline than he usually does and this allows him to take the ball early and flatten out his shots more. This will help him greatly against players with big serves (like Roddick). To me, this match comes down to Roddick’s serve. If he serves well, the edge goes to him. If not, the edge goes to Nadal. This is a pretty even match, but I think in the end Nadal may have just a little too much for Roddick. Both guys are playing some of the best tennis of their lives, and I can’t wait to watch this one!
