2010 French Open – Nick’s Picks – Women’s Singles Finals

Francesca Schiavone (ITA) vs. Sam Stosur (AUS)

Schiavone became the first Italian woman to ever reach a Grand Slam final when Elena Dementieva retired after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. Schiavone will also crack the top-10 rankings for the first time next week – just the second Italian ever after Flavia Pennetta. Congratulations to Francesca on what has been an amazing run!

Before she was a top-ten singles player, Stosur was a top doubles player and won numerous Grand Slam doubles titles. Now, she is focusing on her singles game and it’s paying off in a big way. Just in this tournament she has beaten Henin, Serena and Jankovic and I don’t think there is anything that can stop her. This will be her first appearance in the finals of a Grand Slam singles event.

Stosur is 4-1 against Schiavone and has won the last four times they have played (including twice on clay). Stosur is playing incredible tennis right now. She has the best serve in the women’s game, is winning easy points and her movement is fantastic. She is in such good shape physically and that is what is separating her from the competition. Schiavone is playing well right now too, but she doesn’t have the weapons to take Stosur out the way the Australian is playing. I think this will be a fun match to watch, and in the end I expect to see Stosur holding the winner’s trophy!
