Nick’s Picks- Day 4 at the Us Open 2013

John Isner Vs. Gael Monfils

Monfils is a theatrical show. He is great for the game. Has been plagued by injuries. He can run and will hit the ball even if he is on his back. He is just fun to watch.

Isner is playing really well this summer. Moves well for a big guy. I just think that in a match like this the big server will take it.

Nick’s Pick- Isner takes this one.If his serve falters, Monfils will take advantage

 Bernard Tomic Vs. Daniel Evans

Tomic is a sleeping giant, playing against a fireball coming off a huge win. Evans has a very aggressive game with a huge serve.

Tomic is a big boy, everybody picks him to be a challenger in the next few years. He is very steady with a big serve. He must take advantage of defensive balls and hit volleys. If he gives Evans a chance, watch out.

Nick’s Pick- Rankings edge goes to Tomic, but if he lets Evans in the match it could be an upset.

Daniela Hantuchova Vs. Victoria Duval

When Daniela was a teenager she spent a few years at the Academy working with me. Her groundstrokes are impeccable. She is an excellent doubles player. She is a veteran and her ranking is beginning to slip. She wont hit many winners, but wont miss too many balls. Can cause Vicky to overhit because every ball is coming back.

Vicky has great movement with a killer Bollettieri forehand. She has a steady backhand. The question mark in this match will be the serve. If Vicky can maintain and hold her serve this could be a real battle. However, she is coming off a major upset. Can she handle the mental aspect of the game when she became famous overnight? I have always enjoyed working with the Duval family at the IMG Academy.

Nick’s Pick- I don’t have the right to predict this match. I will say that I hope Vicky is able to go out there and put on a tremendous show and prove that she will be a contender in the future.

Serena Williams Vs. Galina Voskoboeva

I look for Serena to continue her mission to win the US Open. She only knows one way to play. She is coming after you.

 Aleksandra Wozniak Vs. Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka is a true contender to be in the finals. I am sure she will not break down in anyway, she is a tough competitor. She will continue winning.

Nick’s Picks- Day 3 at the US Open 2013

Lleyton Hewitt Vs. Brian Baker

If you ever want anyone in your foxhole, theres no better choice than Hewitt. Yes, his age is a factor, but in his mind he still can beat anyone. Baker has been plagued with injuries, but he is a fierce competitor. The crowd will be behind Lleyton and Baker will have to go for big shots to win.

Nick’s Pick- Hewitt in 4 sets

James Blake Vs. Ivo Karlovic

This will be a sentimental. Even though Karlovic is a kind person, the American crowd will be against him from the start. Karlovic’s weapon is his huge serve and big forehand. I am sure that James Blake will go after his backhand which is weaker. I expect this to be a very interesting match.

Nick’s Pick- The crowd will influence this match. Edge goes to Blake

Jelena Jankovic Vs. Alisa Kleybanova

Alisa played great against Puig in the first round. I expected her to get tired in the 3rd set but she never ran out of steam. Jelena is giving it all she has to get back on top. Jelena was #1 and spent years at the IMG Academy.

Nick’s Pick- Jelena is too strong physically and will take this one.

Sabine Lisicki Vs. Paula Ormaechea

Paula turned pro when she was still in diapers. She has very steady groundstrokes. It will be a big day for her going up against the finalist at Wimbledon in Sabine. Sabine’s style of play is knocking her opponent out. She moves brilliantly, but can make many errors in a row.

Nick’s Pick- Sabine wins this one.

Ricardas Berankis Vs. Novak Djokovic

Berankis trained at the IMG Academy for many years. He is not big in size, but he fights like a giant. He does everything well, but really lacks a 1-2 knockout punch. When you play Djokovic, who can do anything and everything, its awful tough to beat him without a knockout. Berankis will not give up though.

Nick’s Pick– This match goes to Djokovic

Tommy Haas Vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu

Paul Henri is also a former student at the IMG Academy. He has a solid game, especially with his forehand, good serve, but a neutral backhand. He has been plagued with injuries, but don’t count him out. He will not throw out the flag, he will fight you. Tommy, what can I say. He is like a second son. He came to the Academy as a very young teenager and has been with me ever since. He has an excellent support team. He just left the Academy after working hard there for a week. Its amazing what he has done at 35 with all of his injuries. He told me that within him he knows he still has it.

Nick’s Pick– Tommy has too much of everything. Tommy should win in 4 sets, maybe 3.

 Caroline Wozniacki Vs. Ying-Ying Duan

Ying-Ying has solid ground strokes, moves well with an adequate serve. When you play Caroline, who gets everything back including the kitchen sink, you need weapons in order to win. Ying-Ying does not have those weapons.

Nick’s Pick– Wozniacki in straight sets

Sam Stosur Vs Vicky Duval

Stosur is a veteran who is a physical specimen. A perfect example of someone who is shape. She does everything well. She has a good backhand and a good slice. No stranger to the big stage.

Vicky is a former student at the Academy. She has excellent ground strokes and is comfortable at the net. She does have a shaky serve. She will have to play the best tennis of her life and take chances. Will have to sneak into the net and get a high percentage of serves in. She has nothing to lose, she has to go for broke.

Nick’s Pick– Advantage here goes to Stosur, but Vicky can be outstanding in a few years.

Sabine Lisicki Vs. Marion Bartoli

Bartoli is an unorthodox player. Hits as hard as she can from both sides. She moves very well

Sabine is one of the biggest servers on the tour. She hits the ball as hard as she can with no spin, however she is beginning to add angles and the drop shot. Her new coach and her father are doing a great job.

Nick’s Pick- This will be a battle. The serve of Sabine will determine the winner of this match. Bartoli is used to the big stage more, but Sabine is very comfortable on the grass.

Andy Murray Vs. Novak Djokovic

This is a dream match. Andy has matured mentally and has won some of his matches by not throwing the towel in. He has an improved serve and has alot of variety. Excellent return of serve.

What can we say about Djokovic. I cannot find a weakness. This match will not have short rallies, the rallies will be long. If Andy moves away from the baseline the advantage goes to Djokovic. Both are physically fit.

Nick’s Pick- A little edge goes to Djokovic.

Sabine Lisicki Vs. Agnieszka Radwanska

Radwanksa gets a lot of balls back. She will force you to overhit. Her second serve is attackable. If Lisicki continues her percentage of 1st serves in she will win. This is only a match if lisicki’s serve falters

Marion Bartoli Vs. Kirsten Flipkens

Bartoli is a fierce competitor, she has a very good serve and forehand. Always coming after you. Flipkens wasnt in the qulaifying last year. Has worked hard the last year. Very athletic and moves well. A little tentative on the 2nd serve.

This match goes to Bartoli by ranking but could be an upset.

Andy Murray Vs. Fernando Verdasco

Verdasco is a lefty. Physically he is great shape thanks to the help of Gil Reyes. He is able to do a bit of everything on the court. He is very competitive, this is what helps him.

It makes no difference whether a righty or lefty is playing against Murray. His 2 handed backhand will negate whatever Verdasco can throw at him. A short rally favors Verdasco, but the longer the rally the momentum will go to Murrary

Nick’s Pick- Verdasco, you are an asset to the game, but I do not see you winning. This match will go to Murray

Juan Martin Del Potro Vs. David Ferrer

This match is like David vs Goliath. Bless his heart, he always fights but David Ferrer has never been at the top. This match will be determined by the serve of Del Potro. Del Potro does not want to get into big rallies, if he drops behind the baseline, Ferrer has a chance.

Nick’s Pick- This match can go either way, but the serve of Del Potro. If the serve is off then Ferrer can win. If the serve is on look for Del Potro to win.

Marion Bartoli Vs. Sloane Stephens

Bartoli has a big forehand, weird swing motion but is very competitive. She gives you different types of balls.

Sloane is on a roll. Won a close match, it will be an experience. Sloane technically is much sounder but Bartoli is a scrambler.

Nicks Pick- Classic techniques vs a different style.

Li Na vs. Agnieszka Radwanska

Li Na is a very smart player. She is technically very sound, and makes very few mistakes.

Radwanksa is having a great season. In the long run, Li Na forces you to make errors.

Nick’s Pick- This one could really go either way, but edge goes to Li Na
